{"id":47628,"date":"2023-10-04T13:10:49","date_gmt":"2023-10-04T11:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.acea.auto\/?post_type=news-articles&#038;p=47628"},"modified":"2023-10-04T13:10:50","modified_gmt":"2023-10-04T11:10:50","slug":"importance-of-fluoropolymers-for-the-clean-energy-transition-and-the-eus-net-zero-industry","status":"publish","type":"news-articles","link":"https:\/\/www.acea.auto\/news\/importance-of-fluoropolymers-for-the-clean-energy-transition-and-the-eus-net-zero-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Importance of fluoropolymers for the clean energy transition and the EU\u2019s net zero industry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"intro block-container\"><p>In this joint statement, the co-signatories call on the European Commission and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to consider an exemption for fluoropolymers from the universal per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) restriction. <\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"cntnt block-container\">\n<p>This joint statement is signed by key sectors needed to achieve the EU\u2019s strategic autonomy and enable the digital and clean energy transitions, including net-zero technologies that are necessary to reach the EU\u2019s climate and energy objectives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PFAS restriction proposal drafted by five European countries and presented to the ECHA in January 2023 is an important pillar of the EU\u2019s Chemicals Strategy. The co-signatories acknowledge the proposal&#8217;s rationale to regulate PFAS further, and we support such efforts. However, the restriction could have dire consequences for the EU\u2019s clean technology sectors if it takes a PFAS-group approach, including fluoropolymers, while not factoring in the substances\u2019 specific profile and judging them on their merits.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the proper legislative framework in place to address fluoropolymers\u2019 lifecycle emissions, the Commission and ECHA should grant an exemption for fluoropolymer production (including relevant raw materials) and use in industrial applications. This exemption should be coupled with the development of an appropriate regulatory framework.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t<blockquote class=\"shareable-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"content\">With the proper legislative framework in place to address fluoropolymers\u2019 lifecycle emissions, the European Commission and ECHA should grant an exemption for fluoropolymer production and use in industrial
